Altitude Profile (-7 ft to 62 ft)
This is a cycling track starting at the Maria-Hendrikapark in Ostend. From there it takes you to the Keignaert (creek, a remnant of a system of creeks surrounding Ostend until the 17th-18th century), to Snaaskerke (old small town, interesting church and an early 17th century storage barn), over the 'groene 62' cycling path for a number of km (this is basically fine, packed dirt, easy to ride with a normal bike, might be a bit challenging with a racing bike). We then go to the old town ceter of Stene, pass by the airport via the polders and back toward Ostend, first via a small road behind the sand dunes where some WW2 fortifications are still visible, then over the promenade following the cost back to Ostend center and the starting point. It follows mostly quiet road/tracks and stops at a couple of historic locations. Road surface is mainly fairly good, except for a 2 km stretch on packed hard gravel which might not be ideal for road bikes (but doable imo). The circuit is mostly flat and not technically challenging. However, this is the coast and most of the time you will be riding in the sun: protect yourself. Also beware of sometimes strong headwind coming from the sea. There are a number of spots along the way (Ostend, Snaaskerke, Stene) where you can stop for a bite and/or a drink but make sure to carry enough water. I rode this track on a Brompton folding bike in about 1h 45 minutes. If you take it easy it can be a good family outing but please be careful with kids because there are a couple of major road crossings.
