Altitude Profile (942 ft to 2,625 ft)
Cerro Alto is one of the highest peaks in the county. Assuming there's not much coastal fog, you'll get a 360-degree view including Morro Bay, SLO, and North County.
The hike is moderately strenuous and I recommend the direction in this route as the reverse would be pretty steep on the way up. Though, of course, reverse direction might be a bit easier on your knees. I did see evidence of mountain biking but seems like the gravel would be too loose for that. I also saw evidence of horseback riding. Motorized vehicles are not allowed.
The trail is in great shape and is often wide enough to walk two-abreast. I would say it's about 30% shady so plan on getting a good amount of sun.
Take Highway 41 from either Morro Bay or Atascadero and enter the Cerro Alto campground. Drive to the end of the campground - there's a small lot near some restrooms for day use. There is, currently, a $5 self-service day use fee per group.
There's a number of trails in the area but stick to this course and you'll be fine.
