We take off on our bikes early in the morning toward Hornby Island, for which we board a small ferry to the quaint island. Once on solid ground again, we push up to the summit of Mount Geoffrey from which we have many breathtaking viewpoints of the Georgia Strait that separates us from the North American mainland. With a bit of luck, we could spot some bald eagles, the other inhabitants of the island. Once at the summit, some nice singletrack trails lead us back down to the coastline. This peculiar small island has exceptional singletrack swirling around like rollercoasters under a canopy of Douglas firs covered in green fluorescent lichen.
About 20 years ago, a group of locals constructed an impressive network of roughly 80km of relatively gently sloping and twisting singletrack. Add to that spectacular views and rather rare maritime environment and you get one of the most beautiful mountain biking areas of British Colombia.
At the end of the day, we make a short stop to rest and soak in the ambiance with the residents, then return to Denman. Dinner and lodging same as the previous night.
