Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use GPSies?
Launch the application and to start recording simply tap the main display area. Tap and hold again to stop recording. Once you save, your track will show up in the list of tracks accessible through the button in the lower left corner. Access the settings of the application through the button in the lower right.
While recording or reviewing a track just swipe your finger on the track widget to switch from track view to the altitude profile and back.
Don't put the iPhone into sleep mode while GPSies is running, otherwise you will loose the GPS signal. GPSies pocket mode is turned on by default and will turn off your screen automatically when in your pocket.
Due the upload to GPSies.com I get the error message: "Impossible to upload to GPSies.com"
Reasons could be:
1. Track is too short (at least 250 Meter)
2. Username and Password are wrong
3. The length of the name is less than 3 digits
4. The name is a number
5. You named the track "test" or the tracks starts with "test" (please give a better name)
6. You set no activity
7. Connection could not be established
I am moving but GPSies is not drawing a track or indicating speed. Why?
Check your GPS indicator. If the satellite icon is blinking red you do not have a GPS fix. Change your position - you need a clear view of the sky.
Why does GPSies not show a map?
Unfortunately Google will not allow us easily to use their map material and programming interfaces on a paid iPhone application. We are working on an implementation based on a free map service for a later release of the application.
Can I listen to music while recording tracks?
Of course you can and we do it all the time. Simply start your iPod before launching GPSies. If you set your home button double-click (Settings, General, Home Button) to "iPod" you will even be able to bring up the iPod controls while working out.
What if I receive a call or close the application while recording?
Don't worry. GPSies will store your most recent waypoint and pause the current recording session when receiving a call or closing the application. You can any time resume by re-launching the application and tapping the display.
How can I stop my iPhone from automatically locking the screen while recording tracks?
Set Auto-Lock (Settings, General, Auto-Lock) to Never.
How long will the battery last while recording?
We have successfully recorded tracks for more that 3 hours without charging the phone. Using the pocket mode to set the screen to sleep automatically and turning off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will help you increase your battery life.
How accurate will the recording be?
Recording accuracy highly depends on your GPS signal strength and thus on your location and current weather. The level of detail for recording tracks can be set in the application by adjusting the recording interval. You can always correct inaccurate data later in the GPSies.com track editor.
What devices and formats does GPSies support?
GPSies will record your track to your phone and then allow you to upload it to GPSies.com. GPSies.com today supports Google Earth (KML and KMZ), PCX5 tracks and Waypoints, GPX tracks routes and Waypoints, GPX for Garmin Streetpilot, Garmin Course (CRS and TCX), GeoRSS, Logbook, NMEA, OVL (ASCII), Fugawi, KOMPASS Verlag (Alpenverein), Navigon Route, OziExplorer, qpeGps Track, MagicMaps IKT, TomTom ITN, Suunto SDF, Magellan Track and PathAway.
What can we expect in future releases of GPSies?
The GPS logging is only one of the two major use cases for such a device that we see. The second one is obviously loading tracks from GPSies.com, displaying them on a map on the iPhone and allowing you to navigate along the track. We have many other great ideas but we are determined to not overload the perfectly clean and simple design of the current release. Feel free to chip in your ideas or feature requests.
My question is not answered. Where can I address other questions?
Please refer to existing conversations in the GPSies Forum or feel free to start a new topic.
